One of my favorite parts about writing this blog and interacting with other ebay sellers, is that I learn something new almost everyday. I feel like I have a good understanding at what will sell and what won’t, but apparently I am overlooking valuable items. I know that every Thrift Store I visit should bring me more than $100 in profit, but finding the items are key. My normal route is to hit the electronic area first, followed by the toy section, then the junk aisle, and lastly clothes. There are sections I skip only because I am not knowledgeable enough to spot a good find. Yesterday, a new ebayer local to my area, opened my eyes to a new collectable niche that will bring me in more money down the road. He was telling me that his wife found a vintage hand painted Cookie Monster cookie jar for $5. When they checked the completed listings on ebay, they saw that they can make anywhere between $70 – $100! Now I have seen plenty of cookie jars in the past, but I never even thought to pick them up as ebay inventory.
After doing my research, it turns out that there is a huge niche for these things and some are selling for over a thousand dollars! So what should we look for? Well to start, take a look at this amazing collection of vintage cookie jars found on About.com. This should give you a good understanding of the amount of vintage collectable cookie jars there are out there in the marketplace. According to one source that I contacted, “You should always look at the markings on the bottom of the item. There are a lot of good collectable jars out there, but you can easily spot a fake by their markings.” I also recommend reading these articles HERE; they will show you a detailed guide on how to spot a fake. So the next time you are shopping at a Thrift Store, make sure you are going down each aisle. You never know what you might find and how much extra money you may make!
Lastly, I wanted to leave you with a small list of “Hard to find” or “Discontinued” items that can bring you in a good amount of money! I recently found a large lot of one of these, and I am amazed at the profits I’ve been making. Take a look, and let us know if you find one or all! Kudos to you if you have found or find them all!
1. Swiss Miss Breakfast Blends Pick me Up - I’ve found around 10 boxes of these for $.49 each and they sold for about $60.
2. Bake Your Own Twinkle Set - If you can find one of these then consider yourself lucky! Normal retail is about $10, but they were being sold at Hostess Thrift Bakery for about $2 before the whole shut down. You may find them floating in Goodwills as well. They are bringing in $35-$40.
3. Paradise tropical tea – original - This product has been discontinued, but may still be found in some small “Ma and Pa” stores around the country. Also, as always, keep an eye out for them in Thrift Stores.
4. Zicam Cough Max - This is another desired discontinued item that is popping up in random places. Make sure you are keeping your eye out for this one because it’s bringing in around $30 – $40 per box.
