For many years capturing the coveted ROC title basically stamps your ticket to accomplish every fighters dream to fight in the UFC. Recent notable such as UFC Middleweight Champion and top P4P fighter Chris Weidman went straight from ROC after capturing their championship to become one of the top P4P fighters in the world as well as the only man to defeat long time P4P king Anderson Silva, not once but twice, in the UFC.
Other notables such as Ryan LaFlare (10-0) has been on a 3 fight winning streak in the UFC since joining their ranks last year. Also Uriah Hall (8-4) was a TUF finalist as well as the man to send veteran Chris Leben into retirement. Costas Philippou (12-4) who has found tremendous success in the UFC despite losing his past 2 fights. Not to mention the countless other fighters who have made the jump onto the UFC roster and/or "The Ultimate Fighter".
Chris Wade hopes he can use his newly won Championship to catapult himself onto the UFC Roster. We recently had the chance to touch base with Chris briefly on the heels of his victory over Pat DeFranco to capture the ROC gold. Here is what he had to say:
GFL.tv: Congrats on your HUGE victory Chris! How does it feel to be champ?
Chris Wade: Hey thank you very much! It feels good, I haven't been in the cage in a while so it was very good to get a solid win.
GFL.tv: What does it mean to you to be ROC champ?
Chris Wade: It means everything to be Ring of Combat Champion right now. The best of the best on the east coast have almost all fought for R.O.C and won Lou's title in route to UFC. I am very excited to be champ I think it is a step in the direction of where I want to be.
GFL.tv: That is correct most ROC champs punch their ticket to the UFC. Is that your ultimate goal? How many defenses would you like to make before you make the jump?
Chris Wade: Yes that is the goal. Since I started I have had my sights set on two belts. I have one. I want the other one bad. Real bad. I would like to make zero title defenses before making the jump. No one beats out father time, I want to be as young and healthy as possible making the climb for that belt. We all know it is a very tough climb that most don't make. I feel that my resume is lengthy enough at this point to prove I can fight. Now its about getting the opportunity.
GFL.tv: Is there any people or sponsor you would like to shout out that support your career?
Chris Wade: I would love to shout out my sponsors: Titan Post Battle Products, USA Emergency Board Ups, Performance Contracting of LI, Rich Schaeffer, JP Home Improvements, Bilello Construction and Hometown Cafe. Thank you for all of your support! Forgot one Sunkissed Tanning of Oakdale sorry!
GFL.tv: Is there any message you want to send to Dana White and the UFC?
Chris Wade: My message to Dana and the UFC would be to just take a look at me. Everyone runs there mouths saying they are fighters now a days with popularity of MMA. I am really a fighter I was born and raised to do this, I've wrestled competitively since 2nd grade, I'm athletic which many of these guys aren't and ill fight just about anyone. Long Island is only scratching the surface of what will be accomplished by our fighters in mma. Chris, Ryan, Dennis, and Al have really opened the worlds eyes to who we are as a people and given the shot I intend to keep stride with these guys that are up there already doing big things.
GFL.tv: Thanks Chris!
