Newest iPhone killer Nexus One a dud in first week of sales

Hailed as the newest potential iPhone killer, the Nexus One failed to live up to the hype during its first week of sales. Not only did it fall far short of the iPhone 3GS's debut, but estimates by Flurry show that it also was far outpaced by the Droid.

With only 20,000 estimated sales in the first week, the Nexus One would also fall short of last year's My Touch, which garnered 60,000 sales in its first week. In comparison, the Droid sold a quarter of a million units during its first week and the iPhone 3GS sold over a million and a half units.

The low sales aren't because the Nexus One is a bad phone. In my comparison between the Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS, the Nexus One wins out in almost every category except the number of apps available, where the iPhone is likely to remain the market leader for some time to come.

Rather, the Nexus One might have suffered from the recent Droid campaign and being hailed the next iPhone killer. Let's face it, when people are told they must run out and get the next big thing every couple of months, the mad scramble for the newest gadget tends to become a leisurely walk. With Verizon's Droid campaign so fresh in the memory of consumers, much of the air was let out of the Google Phone's hype.

But I expect the Nexus One to have strong sales as it is released on different carriers.
