Argentine club team Newell’s Old Boys took the lead in group 7 of the Copa Libertadores by defeating La Universidad de Chile 2-0 on Tuesday evening. The game was played in Chile, and it was revenge for the Argentine club after having lost 2-1 a week before in Argentina to the Chilean club team.
ESPN Deportes reported on Tuesday that Newell’s scored a goal in each half. The first goal was scored by Maxi Rodriguez in the 18th minute. The second was scored by Martin Tonso in the 83rd minute after being subbed into the game in the 69th minute.
The article stated that Newell’s came out playing hard, trying to score right of the get-go. The Argentine club team needed the win to stay alive in the group. It had lost to the same team a week earlier, so two loses in a row would not be acceptable.
Universidad de Chile outshot their visitors by seven. La U, Chilean club team, shot 14 times compared to Newell’s seven shots. However, the ones that counted belonged to the visiting team.
Newell’s Old Boys are now in first place with six points, tied with La U. However, Newell’s has the advantage due to goal differential.
The other two teams, Olympia from Paraguay and CD Lara from Venezuela, play on Wednesday evening, and they both have four points.
