Two years ago Kelli Higgins and her husband adopted two Kenyan siblings, Chanya, 12, and Latrell, 13. Latrell Higgins recently shared his desire to have baby pictures to his adoptive parents. On Feb. 13, TODAY explained that the couple from Crestview, Fla. wanted baby pictures of the kids, but found none.
One day Chanya suggested that they could pretend they took baby pictures of Latrell. Kelli, who works as a professional photographer, thought that it was a good idea, so did Latrell.
The "newborn" 13-year-old pictures were put on Facebook, and Kelli was surprised by the huge response. In two weeks, the pictures were shared over 4,000 times and had received nearly 10,000 "likes."
“Here's my sweet not so little newborn! His name is Latrell and weighs 112 lbs.,” his mom Kelli Higgins said on Facebook.
The photos have received considerable attention, even earning a feature on the popular site, People.
Kelli hopes to send a message with the "newborn" 13-year-old pictures -- she hopes others will adopt older children.
“These children, once they get past a certain age, they don’t find homes and they age out of foster care,” Higgins told TODAY.com.
Latrell told Today that he gets many questions if he thinks the pictures are embarrassing. He replies that he is very proud of both the images and his mom.
