New2Seattle’s location choice for a casual informative social gathering and learning op about bicycling in Seattle, couldn’t have been better. Velo, an established Seattle bicycle repair and sales shop, re-located on Sixth Avenue from Capitol Hill in March. The new shop is spacious, visually appealing, well-stocked, and conveniently located on the western edge of downtown Seattle. Located at Via6, the venue was perfect. But without food and brew, even the perfect gathering just isn’t quite complete. Hence, Via6 and New2Seattle presented delectable pizza by Tom Douglas, and a fine Seattle craft beer with a bicycling focus by Peddler Brewing Company.
Via6 is a product of Pine Street Group, and primarily the inspiration of Matt Griffin, Principal and Managing Partner. Velo’s location was not by chance. Griffin, a bicyclist himself, had known Velo owner Lloyd Tamura for years so as his vision to include bicycle facilities in his design took form, it was natural to invite the Tamuras’ bike shop to be a part of the new development. In addition to the bike facilities and residences, Via6 includes Restauranteur Tom Douglas’ Assembly Hall, an urban market, as well as Bishop’s Barbershop.
New2Seattle organizer/founder Theresa Stroisch came to Seattle from Brooklyn, NY. Encountering the Seattle “cold shoulder,” she decided to take action. The organization holds events where new or recent arrivals can get acquainted meeting other newbies and learn about Seattle. The organization is a transplant itself, patterned after New2Lou, a friend’s business in Louisville, KY. Debbie, a volunteer assisting attendees, explained that the organization typically partnered with a non-profit when hosting an event. Bicycling and Cascade Bicycle Club made an excellent fit for the evening.
Cascade Bicycle Club was represented by Serena Lehman, Community Outreach Manager, Robin Randels, Classes Coordinator and Ryann Child, Commute Program Assistant. There was an impressive turnout of people, not all new to Seattle or bicycling, but wanting to know more about the in’s and out’s of getting around on two wheels with pedals rather than driving. Lehman’s presentation included information about Seattle’s bicycle infrastructure educating attendees about sharrows and bike lanes as well as safety, and city regulations such as required helmets. Very important to all were tips on how to deal with Seattle’s rainy weather.
