According to The New Zealand Herald on Dec. 15, an announcement made by the Prime Minister John Key declared that James Cameron's next three "Avatar" movies will be filmed in New Zealand. The government had signed a memorandum declaring that the filmmakers would secure a muilt-film deal.
According to Key this would be a rather significant investment of around $500 million for the films and James Cameron, along with his family, had taken up residence in Wairarapa. Cameron expressed his enthusiasm and has excepted that he's in it for the long haul.
"For that reason it's a real pleasure to know I'm going to have so much of my work done here over the next few years".
One of the reason for this action was for the purpose of additional work in the film industry after Peter Jackson had concluded his projects in the region and to continue incentives even further beyond that with the "Avatar" films. This could bring work to New Zealand as well as revenue.
Cameron has an expectation of the films releasing in Christmas of 2016, 2017 and 2018.
