James Nares @ Issue Project Room September 8th
Many associate the No Wave scene with its music, but many don’t realize it was an entire movement. One of the most influential members within the scene’s progression was a man by the name of James Nares, a filmmaker, painter, and also a member of the legendary Contortions. He has been an influential figure to the likes of Jim Jarmusch and is critically praised by one of the most savvy film (if not the most savvy) film critics, Amy Taubin.
The England native turned New Yorker wasn’t immediately accepted in the big city, but he honed his craft through performance art in the late 70’s, and later as an elegant, refined painter. Film was always a medium of experimentation for Nares, and led him into many minimalist explorations of imagery on camera. As of recent, Nares has reestablished his love for the medium because of the advancements in the technology used primarily to create film (Nares’ new films are created in the HD format).
His films will be showing for a one-night only stint at the beautiful Issue Project Room in Brooklyn. According to their website, the films shown will be those with an emphasis on sonic or musical quality. Things will kick off at 8 p.m., and the Issue Project Room is located at 232 3rd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215.
