Pikes Peak Library District will be hosting its fourth annual Mountain of Authors event offering local authors the opportunities to showcase their work. The free event will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 12:30-6 p.m at the East Library. New York Times best-selling author Margaret Coel will be the keynote speaker for the event.

Coel is a native Coloradan who loves the West. As a writer she embodies the, "Write what you know" concept. “Every day I drink the West,” she says.

Coel grew up in Denver but spent most of the summers in the mountains. She’s a traveler who is inspired by the places she sees and visits. Her latest book is called, The Girl With Braided Hair, published in 2007.

Although Coel enjoys writing about the West she also likes to delve into a little mystery. You may have heard of the classic Wind River mystery series. Why does she enjoy writing about mystery? “I enjoy reading mysteries that offer something more than a puzzle. Since I always loved curling up with a good mystery, I thought it would be fun to write one.”

Coel has also authored numerous popular titles such as, The Spirit Woman, The Shadow Dancer, and Chief Left Hand. Aside from being an award-winning author, Coel has also had articles on the West published in popular newspapers like The Science Monitor, The New York Times, and American Heritage of Invention & Technology.

Coel may be a successful author today but she is all too familiar with rejection. She doesn’t see it as a setback. Thanks to her positive perspective she has been successful at her craft. What advice does she offers to the struggling writer?

“Be persistent. Work hard at your craft, and stay with it,” she says.

What influenced Coel’s writing career? “My own love for reading from a very early age and my desire to tell the kinds of stories I love to read. Also, probably the fact that I’m not very adept at anything else.”

Coel is an inspiration to any author or individual pursuing their dreams. If you are a local writer and want to know how to publish a book go to the Mountain of Authors event. Coel is bound to share wisdom that’ll both inspire and motivate you to press on towards your writing goals.
