New York spring 2012 fashion week (view pictures)

There's a lot going on at New York fashion week. Once again the events are being held at Lincoln Center, the new home of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. For spring 2012 designers are all about color and prints. They're mixing nearly every size of print and pattern and working with anything bright, from primary colors to neon hues. If you love to mix it up, spring 2012 will be the season for you. There's no real rhyme or reason to what works on the runway compared to what translates to real life, so take a look at what was going on on the catwalk and pick and choose what trends might work for you.

One time is try mixing prints while wearing fairly simple shapes. This is a tactic used by many designers and stylists to keep a look clean and polished, while still experimenting. When it comes to color, figure out what colors work best with the neutrals you love. If you stick to nude and blush tones, neons create a color palette that's right on trend. If you favor gray, stick with the dusty colors like lavender and soft yellow.

Spring 2012 seems to be about the dress as much as it's about pants. Skirts are of every length with designers showing mini skirts, hemlines at the knee, midi-length and maxis. For pants, it's all about new proportions with slight pleating through the waist and tapered legs that hit at the ankle. The skinny pant is still going strong, but instead of the scrunched fabric at the ankle we've seen for a few seasons, designers are inching towards a clean cut skinny leg opening that is more sleek.
