New York's Chocolate Show: A chocoholic's dream

I love New York City this time of year.  The autumn air is crisp, the ice skating rink opens at Rockefeller Center and trees all over the city are adorned with thousands of twinkling lights.  Everyone knows the holiday season is on the way, but the really sweet thing about this time of year is the arrival of the annual New York Chocolate Show!  Now in its 14th year, The New York Chocolate Show was founded by Sylvie Douce and Francois Jeantet and is the largest event of its kind in the United States.  It should be an annual event for all chocoholics!

This year’s event will kick-off on Wednesday evening, November 9th with a Broadway Themed Chocolate Fashion Show & Opening Night Preview.  Hosted by George Duran of TLC’s “Ultimate Cake Off” and Food Network’s “Ham on the Street”, the show will feature new Broadway hits including Follies, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and The Addams Family and classics ranging from Phantom of the Opera to The Lion King.  Celebrity chefs and costume designers will pair up to create chocolate filled costumes inspired by these “Great White Way” hits.

New York’s Chocolate Show exhibits and events will open on Thursday, November 10th and run through Sunday, November 13th giving chocolate lovers plenty to celebrate.  There will be more than 65 national and international chocolate companies on hand to showcase their chocolates and chocolate-inspired creations.  Celebrity chefs will share tricks of the trade in the show’s two Dacor Culinary Theaters and the Chocolate Show’s Barnes & Noble Book Store will have authors on hand for book signings.

Children should be taught the important things in life at an early age and New York’s Chocolate Show assists with these important lessons by providing plenty of chocolate arts and crafts activities in the Kids Zone.  New this year in the Kids Zone is a “Chocolate Grab” game where kinds can win tickets to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the world-famous Radio City Rockettes or Cathy Rigby is Peter Pan at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.  The game will take place two or three times daily when each child will grab a handful of chocolates.  The fortunate child that grabs the specially wrapped piece of chocolate will win the tickets - reminiscent of Willie Wonka’s Golden Ticket, don’t you agree?

For the grown-up chocolate lovers there will be plenty of chocolates to sample and purchase from the extensive group of participants which include 2 Chicks with Chocolate, Chocolat Michel Cluizel,  Divine Chocolate, Jacques Torres Chocolate, American Heritage Chocolate, Jer’s Chocolates, Roni-Sue’s Chocolate, Valrhona and Xocolatti to name just a few.  If eating chocolate is good then drinking it must be even better, right?  Yes.  Chocolate Shop Wines will be on hand with samples of its indulgent chocolate lovers wines:  Chocolate Red Wine, Box of Chocolates and Crème de Cocoa.  Seriously, how can you call yourself a chocolate lover if you do not show up for this event?

The New York Chocolate Show is held at The Metropolitan Pavilion located at 125 W 18th Street in New York.  Hours are:  Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 am til 7:00 pm and Sunday, 10:00 am til 6:00 pm.  Advance tickets can be purchased at www.chocolateshow.com.  Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door for Thursday, Friday and Sunday shows and $35 in advance and $40 at the door for Saturday’s show.  Two children ages 5 through 12 are admitted free with an adult. Additional children are $8 each.  Children under 4 are admitted free.  Tickets for the Fashion Show and Opening Night Preview are $150.

Chocoholics living outside New York, please note we have three major airports and plenty of trains to get you here.   Chocoholics living in the New York area - you have subways, buses, taxis and your feet - use what you have and get to this show!  See you there!
