The New York Jets took out the Atlanta Falcons on a Monday night thriller in heroic fashion. Nick Folk kicked a game winning 43 yard field goal as time inspired and it thwarted the double digit comeback by Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons. CBSsportsline.com notes that the Falcons have lost their third game in a row to fall to (1-4).
The early part of the game belonged to the Jets, but once “Gang Green” took a 27-14 lead in the fourth quarter, Matt Ryan turned into “Matty Ice.” The cool calm and collected quarterback led the Falcons on back to back touchdown drives and Atlanta found themselves with a 28-27 lead with under two minutes left.
Then it was Geno Smith’s turn. The rookie played his most complete game of the season and he finished with a flourish. On the final drive, Smith completed three consecutive passes that covered 34 yards. Then he scrambled around the left corner for another eight yards. Three plays later, the Jets found themselves in field goal range and Nick played the “Folk Hero” once again.
As Rex Ryan put it, New York used a total team effort to earn the road victory over Atlanta. Geno Smith completed 16/20 passes for a modest 199 yards and three touchdowns. Yet, his biggest stat of the game turned out to be zero turnovers.
The win helped the Jets (3-2) earn a second place tie with the Miami Dolphins. They are one game behind the one loss Patriots.
For Atlanta, Jaquizz scored two rushing touchdowns in the loss.
Although Atlanta ended up taking the lead late in the game, they could have had a bigger lead. Right before the half, Mike Smith decided to go for a touchdown instead of a field goal at the one yard line. Needless to say, the Falcons were stuffed at the goal line.
