At Houghton, stylist turned designer, Katharine Polk has been gaining attention for her Katharine Hepburn-inspired pieces. The easy style looks, much like the celebrity, effortlessly chic. It’s no surprise that the collection has already garnered the attention of droves of young celebrities including Selena Gomez and Lucy Hale.
Her Spring 2014 collection built on the idea, drawing from Polk’s recent getaway to Miami. “The pieces have a light air to them, like palm fronds shifting in the warm breeze,” said Polk.
To translate the easy vibe into beauty, L'Oréal Professionnel Artist Laura Polko dreamed up shabby-chic braids that perfectly paired with the clothing. The DIY-friendly look is easy to replicate at home, especially once Laura shared her trade secrets.
What was your inspiration?
The look is fresh and simple– the hair needed to move with the clothes and feel roughed-up and beachy.
Can you explain the overall look?To create the braids, on damp hair, apply a cocktail of L’Oréal Professionnel Mousse Volupté and L’Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Root Spray from roots to ends. Your hair can then be rough dried with a blow dryer for volume and texture at the crown. After center parting strands and applying L’Oréal Professionnel True Grip all over hair to provide weightless volume and grip, make a low ponytail with an elastic at the nape of the neck. After teasing hair with fingers at the crown, style your ponytail into a classic or fishtail braid. To finish, pull out pieces from the braids gently to create a roughed-up, lived-in feel. For a final touch, finish off with L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium 3 Hairspray.
What do you see as the big hair trends for the season?
Braids are back in everyday shape and form!
What is your one hair essential or rule?My essential? Dry Shampoo! I love L'Oréal Professionnel Fresh Dust.
