New York cosplay workshop: 'A cry for hero's in the community'

See also

Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 A group of people from in and around the New York area came out in the snow and cold for one reason to be part of a community. They talked cosplay design and about what inspires them. Snow ball fights and great food at Brooklyn's own "Action burger" and meet new people as well as hang out with cherished old friends. The atmosphere was bright, energy and new friend's grew in this atmosphere, you would think comics and manga fan would be above pettiness. Video games played for free, learning about crafts and photography, lighting and such. However as this article was being written about the great time had by all on the 14th, drama takes center stage and pettiness shows it head. You would think people who read comics and have such love of good guys, that they would know how to act with out jealousy. Good thing is, as soon as the news started to hit it did something amazing, the Cosplay USA group's banded together with people from all over the world to form a stronger Cosplay International.

Before we go into the drama, let's hear what people had to say from the workshop on Saturday.

Stephen Kundrat had this to say

I found it to be an interesting and awesome experience especially meeting everyone. The people were kind and amazing people. I learned a lot from them and learned new things as well.

Janna Berard aka "Chibi Loki"

I cosplay to make a difference to the public. I love making them smile, and express their feelings toward the characters I portray.I joined the workshop because it was a get together before the holidays while meeting new people and seeing old friends.

E Vil Rzk Aka Bucky was kind enough to say this

Well coming to New York has been amazing. It really has everything you could ever want. I love to make things, and try new things. A lot of cosplayers are deterred by the negativity that is out there, but if you really want to do something I've found that you should just do it. Don't care what others think, not friends, not family. I've been able to partake in several projects that way and make some awesome friends in the past couple years. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. If you have a goal, go for it.

While we here at examiner will not take side "Bucky" asked us to post this with links to more on the story as it unfolds. Please take the time to read these passionate words From a person calling for positive people to have a clear head.

Should This Be Allowed?
By: The Winter Soldier

"Should this be allowed?" It is a question that is often brought up on Cosplay sites for various reasons. Most recently on Otaku House, is about a German Cosplayer: LOKI on Midgard aka FahrLight who has been placed on blast in public after an unknown amount of "complaints" from an anonymous audience.

According to the Merriam Webster's dictionary:

Bully - Verb

Transitive Verb
1 to treat abusively
2 to affect by means of force or coercion

Due to the "many, many, MANY emails" that Otaku House has apparently gotten in reference to Fahr that they have been coerced into putting her on the figurative chopping block - PUBLICLY. They claim to want to know if Fahr should still be allowed in the contest from their audience, instead of a decision made among Staff, behind closed doors. Was this a ploy for drama and ratings, or simply a poor business practice?

Instead of contacting Fahr privately to allow her to express a defense, she now has to defend herself in front of a roiling public, who only know what they were shown, and now make accusations blindly. One person even posted "I bet her bracers aren't even real." However the bracers are part of the Loki costume that Fahr had commissioned. There are several photos of their existence.

Now that the seed of doubt has been planted, now other readers will doubt and accuse without getting the facts. She was accused of cheating in the contest. For this, she now has to defend the costumes she owns from commissions and has made on her own. For any Cosplayer who has ever been thrust into the forefront of a mob, they know how uncomfortable of an ordeal this is.

Cosplay has become a world overrun by bullying and anonymous attackers that can drive away even the most resilient cosplayer and fan. It should not be a question on whether or not this activity should be changed instead of promoted.

LOKI on Midgard aka FahrLight had this to say.

Dear Followers.

Bad news. I've got a letter and this link in the mail from OTAKU HOUSE.

Facts are:
I've sent them around 6-8 Loki-cosplay photos and around 4-5 Other cosplays, and they managed to pick the two shopped photos. Out of all that photos. I see it as their fault that they did not mail me back that I could not use them, while he picked them out of all the submitted photos. (all others had NO edited details on the costumes)

FACT 01:
I did shop two armor parts onto the Loki-photo they picked, yes. And I stated so on my DA.

FACT 02:
I did edit a part of the hood-crystals around the collar of the Jack Frost Hoodie. BUT I painted the hood, and made the pants, as you can see in this video:

Examiner will of course keep following this story and hope's people from the other camp sends forward a spoke person to share their side of this story. (Edited on 12/20/2013)

From Otaku house Follow the link "Here" for the full announcement.

* Preferably none of which that you have previously submitted for the qualifiers.

* You are encouraged to submit different characters for each photo to display your versatility.
* Photos are required to show at least 2/3 of the body and costume
Fahr Sindram have instead submitted 8 photos. While 95% of the finalists follow our instructions correctly, there are some finalists who send us part of their collection anyway. What we usually do to expedite the process is either choose our favorite 3 or the 3 that best suit our requirements. If we can’t choose because they all look equally good, we’ll ask the cosplayer to shortlist the pictures themselves and resubmit to us again. To be honest, it is usually pretty troublesome when contestants don’t follow our rules and one of the main reasons for delays in starting the Finals......
