New York Cosmos to host U.S. Open Cup match at St. John’s University

The New York Cosmos will host a third-round U.S. Open Cup game on May 28 at St. John’s University. The legendary franchise faces the winner of a second-round contest between the NPSL’s Brooklyn Italians and the PDL’s Jersey Express.

For the Cosmos, a third-round victory might result in a meeting with MLS’ New York Red Bulls. The third round is made up of 32 teams – the 24 second-round winners and eight NASL clubs.

“The U.S. Open Cup is an important tournament for us and we’re pleased to be given the chance to host the game.” Cosmos Chief Operating Officer Erik Stover said in a release. “Playing at St. John’s Belson Stadium gives us an opportunity to showcase the team to our fans in Queens.”

This year's U.S. Open Cup winner will earn a berth into the 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions' League. MLS’ D.C. United is the defending U.S. Open Cup champion.
