The New York Cosmos hope that some home cooking leads to a much-needed victory when they play their first home game in three https://twitter.com/aksportsweeks tonight against the San Antonio Scorpions.
The Cosmos returned to the North American Soccer League with a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on August 3, but the iconic franchise hasn’t scored since in posting a 0-0 draw at Tampa Bay and a 3-0 loss at Carolina.
New York’s home opener was played in front of a sellout crowd and we’ll find out later this evening if another near 12,000 fans come out to Shuart Stadium at Hofstra to see the team’s second home game of the fall season.
"San Antonio is a very hungry team right now and we know they're going to come in here 100% motivated to get the result," said Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese. "I expect a very tough match, but we're prepared and our players know this is a very important game for us. Coming home after a couple games away, we want a good result for the fans as well."
The Scorpions have lost all of their games this fall season and the Cosmos must capitalize and get three points tonight with a victory to stay near the top of the standings. The fall season’s winner will face the spring season champion Atlanta Silverbacks in Soccer Bowl on Nov. 9.
"The match against the New York Cosmos is an exciting game, and I hope that we will be playing better at that time," said Scorpions coach Tim Hankinson. "Right now our possession is disrupted too easily, so getting guys on the same page is a challenge. However, we aim to find ourselves in New York this weekend."
