The New York Cosmos announced that they have acquired defender James Ockford on loan from the Seattle Sounders FC.
The Cosmos, who returned to the North American Soccer League in 2013 after a three-decade absence, hope the 21-year-old center back will help in their quest to repeat as Soccer Bowl champions.
“James is a promising young defender who will provide competition and depth on our back line,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said, according to a press release.
Ockford was selected by Major League Soccer’s Sounders FC in the second round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He was the 21st overall pick.
Ockford closed out his college career by playing for Louisville and he was named the American Athletic Conference’s Defender of the Year. He spent his first three college seasons with Mount St. Mary’s University (N.Y.) before transferring.
