New York City public library shares yoga and books with visitors

The Riverdale Library, located in the Bronx, N.Y., has more than just books on its shelves these days. According to The Riverdale Press on Feb 21, yoga classes begin at 10 a.m. for seniors and those with physical limitations.

Pedro Perez-Cabezas, a local Riverdalian and certified Hatha Yoga instructor with the Integral Yoga Institute and registered with the Yoga Alliance, not only leads this library yoga class but crafted it in order to share its many benefits. Yoga enthusiasts already know that yoga improves flexibility and muscle strength, but newbies should also be aware that yoga can aid in posture and immune system functionality; ultimately leading to a better sense of well-being.

“I designed the class to make sure that I can have the participants feel comfortable with yoga, starting in the more gentle chair-assisted side of yoga, while learning about the other aspects of yoga as well,” he said.

The class, entitled Gentle Yoga, offers variations of basic yoga positions paying extra attention to the special needs of individuals. Attendees use chairs to assist them through the various poses. With soft music as a backdrop, Mr. Perez-Cabezas instructs the class through slow movements, helping them to concentrate on better posture and controlled breathing.

While registration for the current session is closed, contact the Riverdale Library here for information on future classes. Public library programs are offered free of charge. Here’s hoping to a successful program so more people will be able to attend a yoga class and check out a book on the same visit!
