New Year's Resolution: Connecting families with more to families with less

New Year's Resolutions: We have probably all tried them at one time or another, some have succeeded while many don't seem to even make it very far into the year. Maybe the goals were unrealistic or perhaps the purpose was just not important enough to follow up on.

Family-to-Family, Inc., a nonprofit hunger and poverty relief organization, has a New Year's resolution program that is easy to follow through on and is also very rewarding for everyone who participates.

The organization has created a Twelve Months of Giving Calendar, one act of kindness for families to engage in for every month of 2014.

For instance, starting with the January Pajama Drive, the participating family chooses pajamas for a boy or girl size 18 months to size 16. Then, they mail the pajamas or take them to the appropriate distribution location. The donating family can also include a Valentine’s Day card and the community partners will distribute them to children in need.

“We are a national organization that works on the local level,” Pam Koner, Executive Director of Family-to-Family explained. “Typically, someone in Orlando who might do one of our 'giving' projects would be linked to our Orlando partner as the recipient community.”

“Our partner in Orlando would identify a family/child to give the items (there are different projects for each month providing everything form pajamas, books, food, dolls etc,) to,” Koner said. “Orlando participants on the giving side would follow the instructions in the Calendar of Giving for each project, as each one requires contact with F-to-F at some point during the appropriate month.”

Family-to-Family also encourages donors and recipients to connect and communicate if they feel comfortable in doing so. They suggest donors reach out to the family they have been linked with by letter. Often the sponsored families write back and a bond of friendship is formed that may never have had the opportunity before. This is a simple yet powerful way sponsors can change lives for those in need.

By connecting donors one-to-one with specific families in need, Family-to-Family’s mission is to bring a large and seemingly intractable problem – poverty – into personal focus, making proactive, attainable results possible; one family at a time.
