New Year's goal: Save money

It is not easy to save money these days, but it is possible. A little work on your part and you can be saving in no time.

Why might you want to save money?

  • Perhaps you want to take a mini vacation next year.

  • Or, you might want to purchase a new flat screen television if you have everything else you need.

  • Maybe you want to help your daughter purchase text books in the fall.

No matter your reason, there are ways to accomplish your goal.

  • Save all your change by placing it in a washed out gallon size pickle jar. All your pocket can be placed in the jar each night, as well as your wife's purse change whenever she cleans it out. Change from returnables can also be added to the jar.

  • Place your tip money from work in an envelope.

  • Coupon money can also be saved. If you are a good couponer, you can save a lot of money by combining coupons with sales. What you saved is what you put away.

  • Quit smoking, and place that money somewhere safe each day. This is a great way to save money for something you want, and quite the incentive to quit a bad habit.

  • If you walk a lot, you may have noticed how little people care about our environment. Usually, there is a plethora of returnables left on the ground and on picnic tables. Pick them up, cash them in, and save the money.

BONUS TIP: Get the family involved. Let your children know that, if they want spending money for the vacation, they will want to save their birthday and holiday money. Otherwise, they will not have any money of their own. This teaches important lessons in responsibility and finances.
