New Year's goal: Eating healthy

Eating healthy in the new year is a goal that is often set, but not always followed. The goal itself might encompass numerous mini-goals, all of which are important. As a collective, these mini goals will provide you with a big change in health by December 31st.

Concentrating on just one or two mini-goals will provide a smaller change by that date. This lesser change may be fine with some people, while others desire the bigger change. If the latter is the case, combine the mini-goals listed below, or others, to make the desired change.

Mini-goal options:

  1. Consume more fruits and vegetables.

  2. Begin switching to organic foods.

  3. Eat locally.

  4. Eat foods that are in season.

  5. Replace soda with homemade lemonade and iced tea options.

  6. Grow herbs and produce, organically.

  7. Eat salads with meals, decreasing the carb loaded foods and increasing intake of fruits and vegetables as per No. 1.

  8. Pack healthy lunch choices for work or school, rather than ordering food or eating from the vending machines.

  9. Purchase foods from farmer's markets, whose vendors are organic growers.

  10. Look into local CSA's. These setups sell organic produce, and some also sell organic meats as well as other items. Buy into one if it suits you.

  11. Create a repertoire of easy, healthy meals to create when time is lacking.

  12. Choose five ways to make breakfast healthier, and start changing things up.

Baby steps are key for many people, rather than taking one giant leap into the unknown, so the options above can be taken one step at a time. Notice there are 12 options available. Begin one option the first weekend of each month, and you will be well on your way to eating healthier before December 31st.
