New Year's Eve getways: First Night Monterey

Are you looking for a way to ring in the New Year? Perhaps something for the whole family to enjoy? This New Year’s Eve is the perfect excuse for a weekend getaway as the big day falls on a Thursday night - perfect for a nice long weekend. First Night Monterey is designed to be an affordable, alcohol-free family celebration.

This sober way to usher out the old year and welcome in the new takes place in 25 performance venues, 70 performances, 8 art stations, and 9 hours of celebrating throughout a four-block area of downtown Monterey. The night kicks off with a Mardi Gras style parade down Alvarado Street. Colorful clowns, costumed dance troupes from many cultures and performers of every description sing and dance their way through the streets. The evening continues with music, dancing, poetry, art exhibits and many kid-friendly activities.

Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for youth aged 5-15, and children under four are admitted free. Tickets are available on New Year’s Eve, but prices do increase. These tickets include the celebration leading up to the Midnight Countdown, but additional tickets are required for the “Grand Finale.”

Located on the coast, the Monterey Peninsula is famous for its beauty, golf, galleries and world-renowned aquarium.
