The famed Waterford Crystal New Year's Eve ball was re-ignited today and sent up a towering 130-foot pole an top of Manhattan's One Times Square, where it will remain for the remainder of this year.
Normally, the ball is only sent up the pole on New Year's Eve, where it sits, waiting for 11:59 p.m., when the ball descends to its original position as the countless masses count down to the new year.
Powered by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs and covered with 2,668 Waterford crystals, it weighs 11,875 pounds.
Before the beautiful orb was sent into the air, 288 of the 2,668-panels were replaced with new crystal ones, which were etched with open-winged doves to mark the theme "Let There Be Peace."
