A Utah family reports watching "one, big, white ball of light" with smaller red-orange lights around it hover and then drop below the tree line and move toward ground level on New Year's Eve, according to January 3, 2012, testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The reporting witness was taking the garbage out when the lights were first seen. He called his wife and children outside.
"They did not look like airplanes or helicopters," the reporting witness stated. "In fact an airplane flies by in the video clearly showing a contrast to the moving lights. I also called my friend who lives elsewhere and he went outside his front door and watched the event from his house."
The witness described what they were seeing.
"There was one big, white ball of light that seemed to be accompanied by smaller red/orange lights. The white light hovered while the orange lights moved around in paths sometimes in formation. Sometimes three, sometimes four orange lights at a time would move about and changed directions completely unlike an airplane or helicopter. They could fly in formation or break apart from each other. Sometimes they would disappear into space. Sometimes they would just go dark. More red/orange lights would appear to take their place. The whole event lasted about 20 minutes or half an hour."
All of the lights eventually moved below the tree line toward ground level.
"In the end the large white light dropped below the treetops, taking the smaller orange lights with it. My wife and I were completely excited and wondrous of what we had just seen and recorded. Others around the world have posted the exact same thing over the next few days."
The video was not uploaded with the MUFON report, although the witness indicated the video was uploaded to YouTube. Searching YouTube for Utah UFO cases on December 31, 2011, this video was available today. MUFON does not allow links to other web sites within the public portion of the witness testimony. No town name was mentioned in the public portion of the witness testimony, but the linked YouTube video indicates that the video was shot from Salt Lake City. Utah is a current UFO ALERT 5 rating, with a low number of UFO sightings nationally. Utah had 5 reports in December, the 43rd highest reporting state - while California had 63 reports in December 2011 - the highest reporting state in the nation.
