What better way to start 2012 with a fine selection of contemporary poets? Already in its 38th edition The Poetry Project will host a staggering 140 poets at Saint Mark's Church. Among them quite a few big names such as Patti Smith and Jonas Mekas. The latter is also known for his movies. A Jewish-Lithuanian refugee, he survived a forced labor camp in nazi Germany and settled in New York soon after WW II. His poetry is characterized by profound simplicity and subtle humbleness. Approaching his 80th birthday Jonas Mekas is an enthusing speaker. Another lust for the ear will be Patti Smith's soul-ridden voice. Proceedings will go to Saint Mark's community projects. What better New Year's Resolution could one wish for!
Excerpt from "The Talk of Flowers" by Jonas Mekas:
I do not know, whether the sun
accomplished it,
the rain or wind –
but I was missing so
the whiteness and the snow.
