New Year's Day 2014 Bank holiday: Most banks closed, not open New Year's Day 1/1

New Year's Day is quickly approaching, and Americans are making plans for the holiday which begins with early bank closings on New Year's Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 31. New Year's Day is a federal holiday but many bank customers are still wondering if banks are open New Year's Day, and if banks close early on New Year's Eve. According to The New York Times on Sunday, Dec. 29, banks have the option to close New Year's Day, Jan. 1, so most banks have chosen to close on the holiday.

Go Banking Rates.com on Monday, Dec. 30, also reports most banks aren't open New Year's Day, and many banks will close early on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31. Most bank lobbies won't be open for deposits, withdrawals or loan applications on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Banks aren't the only places that are closed on New Year's Day. Appeal Democrat reported Monday, Dec. 30, that government offices, schools and post offices aren't open New Year's Day either.

A federal holiday, New Year's Day is always observed on Jan. 1. This year New Year's Day is observed Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014. Because New Year's Day is also a USPS holiday, all United States post offices are closed as well and there's no mail delivery on New Year's Day either. You'll need to finish your bank transactions and post office errands by the close of business on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Banks that are closed on New Year's Day will reopen for normal business on Thursday, Jan. 2.

TD Bank Stores are Closed, Not Open on New Year's Day

TD Bank is one of the few banks in the country that is open on some major holidays. However, TD Bank employees need a break once in a while, so they are closed on New Year's Day, Jan. 1. TD Bank supermarket stores follows the same holiday schedule as traditional stores. You can always pick up extra cash at your bank's ATM.

Banks that are Closed on New Year's Day

The following Rhode Island banks observe New Year's Day, and their lobby and drive-up windows are closed, with the exception of Washington Trust's McQuade's supermarket branch locations which will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local ATM machines are almost always open unless they're inside a bank lobby. Call first to be sure.

TD Bank Stores are NOT open on New Year's Day, Jan. 1.
Webster Bank's holiday schedule shows that their banks are not open on New Year's Day.
Citizens Bank holiday schedule reports that their bank branches are closed on New Year's Day.
Washington Trust's Bank Holiday Schedule shows a few supermarket branches will be open on New Year's Day.
Sovereign Bank offices will be closed to observe the 2014 New Year's Day Day holiday.
Coastway Credit Union observes New Year's Day on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.
Greenwood Credit Union's holiday schedule reports the bank is closed New Year's Day.
Bank of America offices and banking centers will be closed in observance of New Year's Day.
