What is open and closed in your state on New Year’s Day 2014? New Year’s Day is a federal holiday so it can get confusing when it comes to what is open or closed for this first day of the year nationwide. Most retail and grocery stores are open on New Year's Day. Mass transit is also likely in operation, but with reduced hours, according to the New York Times on Dec. 29.

The stores may have reduced hours, so they may open later than usual and close their doors earlier than their normal Wednesday. Are liquor stores open on New Year's Day in your state? Where do you go to find all the answers? There's a webpage that offers the liquor laws for each state, including which holidays that the liquor stores must remain closed. (Link below).

Banks

Most banks are closed, but some may be open inside the supermarkets, so it’s best to check your bank’s website or call ahead to see if they are open on New Year’s Day.
