San Francisco’s Museum of Craft and Folk Art (M.O.C.F.A.) is set to open their newest exhibition this Friday. It is titled FIAT LUX, and it consists of newly commissioned works by Bay Area conceptual artist Randy Colosky. He is known for works that expresses physicality by using commonplace and industrial materials, which in turn alter the standard functions of traditional craftsman processes. Colosky uses theories from domains of science and philosophy, and lets his works revolve around structures of repetition, tension, and containment. Trained in traditional ceramics and building construction, he uses free incorporation of materials from these two genres (which would include metal and wood), in order to create thought-provoking and often witty works.
In addition to the FIAT LUX exhibition, M.O.C.F.A. will also host four related events, two in November, one in December, and one in February. An opening reception will take place this Thursday at 6pm, with a member and press preview at 5. On Saturday, there will be a Make It @ MOCFA event with guest artist Stan Peterson, in which visitors will have an opportunity to use scrap wood, cordless drills, and dowels to create and build a collective sculpture inside the museum gallery. On December 1st, there will be a Craft Bar with Etsy Labs, which will also be an opportunity to create handmade take-away pieces, just in time for the holiday season. And finally on February 4th, there will be an artist talk with Randy Colosky himself.
FIAT LUX opens this Friday, and will run until March of 2012. Log on to www.mocfa.org for more information.
