On one of the most elegant of afternoons, I found myself on the patio of the stunning Villa Aurora. The view is nothing short of sumptuous, perched high above the city fray in the Pacific Palisades. Chilled glass of champagne in hand, exquisitely crafted canapés within arms reach, and amidst animated conversation - we had all come to enjoy a very special fundraising recital by the New West Symphony Orchestra of works created by Mozart called the Contredanses.
As we were seated in the Grand Hall, it was impossible not to loose focus for a moment... the tall glass paned doors were opened to the warm, perfumed breeze of an early Los Angeles fall and in the golden glow of the afternoon sun, the length of the legendary 'Queen's necklace' was sparking, seemingly just beyond the reach of our finger tips.
The afternoon was the inspiration of host and President of the NWSO Board of Directors, Mrs. Jennifer Zobelein, who along with and Mrs. SaraLee Baldwin introduced the event and our dear friend Raoul Mongilardi. Raoul is truly a music aficionado and imbued his enthusiasm for the art to every patron in the room, setting the stage for the NWSO's beautiful and incredibly talented Concertmaster Danielle Belen. Dressed in a chic, long day gown, Ms. Belen and her hand chosen members of the performing quartet, took their seats and with no ado sculpted such melodies, she had to remind us to hold our bursting applause to the end of the performance!
Mozart created the Contredanses for piano and in planning the afternoon, Mrs. Zobelein went to NWSO's Bob Bockholt who transcribed the pieces for a string quartet; and did so in such an elevated manor, each instrument was beautifully showcased.
The afternoon was every part the elegant experience one might imagine and it comes with unmitigated enthusiasm that I recommend each and every one of you who have a passion for the classics and/or an inclination to uphold one of the ultimate legacies... the harmony of classical music... That you find it in your schedule to attend a concert and if that proves to be impossible, support the foundation. http://www.newwestsymphony.org/
A very special thank you to the New West Symphony Orchestra, Jennifer and Craig Zobelein for selecting these pieces commissioned by my ancestors; Bob Bockholt for transcribing; Danielle Belen (Concertmaster, First Violin), Lauren Chipman (Principal Viola), Ina Veli (Second Violin), Mark Tanner (Principal Cello) for their stunning recital; Raoul Mongilardi and Robert Edbourg for their wonderful introduction and support; Anthony Young for always being so generous and kind; Neil Reola for the photos; La Divina for her kind words and my best friend Jessica Kill for going out of her way to make things work perfectly, even though she always has a mountain on her plate. More over, thank you to the incredible patrons of the NWSO for sponsoring and so many guests including Westlake Village Mayor Philippa Klessig for supporting this unforgettable afternoon.
