In preparation for this Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) redesigned their website, goldenglobes.org, for this year’s event.

This marks the first time since 2005 that goldenglobes.org received a much needed facelift. The HFPA chose the web design and online marketing agency Bump Networks, who also designed the official website back in 2005, to accomplish this project.

The new site received significant immediate attention. Bump networks reported on their website that “The new site received over a million visitors within the first two days, and an additional 40% traffic boost following the posting of the nominees for the 67th Golden Globe Awards.” Clearly, this impressive initial success coming from updating the website provides a potential boost going into the event.

Launched December 13th, 2009, just in time for the new decade, the new site displays a much more formal facade than the previous site and makes a conscious attempt to build the user’s excitement. The color scheme, black background, and use of transparency as well as the streamlined interface add to the increased formality of the site. The homepage showcases a large photo slide show of stars at last year’s event, bringing focus on the stars and the glamor associated with them. A widget that the web user can share on other sites immediately demands attention with daily update videos and commercials. The countdown to the event displayed at the top of the homepage increases the sense of urgency to watch on television and find out the winners for this year.

In terms of social media and interacting with the viewers, subtle links to YouTube and Twitter do also appear at the bottom of this site. Surprisingly, the HFPA apparently decided not to try something like the message boards that appear on the 2009 Oscar’s website to interact further with web users.

The 67th Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, January 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The three hour live telecast on NBC begins 5pm PST.

This article caused me to check out the website. I can't compare to the old version, but based on your feedback, it appears that this one certainly had the facelift features that the multi-media designs of this decade require. Thank you.

A very informative piece. Like one of the other commenters, I hadn't seen the old site, but the new one sparkles--efficient and elegant. Thanks for pointing it out.

Yes, I agree with both Edith and c. The recent Oscars got me thinking again about about this great LA web design article. Definitely a sign of an awesome article when it sticks with you like this one does! Keep 'em comin!
