Kayla Manson, 13 year-old, allegedly helped Wayne Treacy track down Josie Ratley after he received upsetting and disturbing text messages from Josie. Kayla Manson will be prosecuted as a juvenile to a charge of principal to attempted murder.
Kayla Manson appeared on TODAY Show to share her side of the story. She was very calm as she spoke with Meredith Vieira about that tragic day on March 17th when Josie Ratley nearly lost her life at the hands (or steel toed boots) of Wayne Treacy.
Kayla Manson says she is sorry about what happened and misses Josie as her friend. Her aunt, who appeared with Kayla, defended Kayla as a caring person that takes care of her special needs cousin.
Although Kayla Manson said she was not aware that Wayne Treacy would brutally attack Josie Ratley, according to court documents, as the attack was set in motion, Kayla Manson turned to a friend and stated, "She gets what she deserves." Kayla Manson stated to Meredith Vieira she thought that Wayne would just cuss her out.
If found guilty, Kayla Manson will face time in a juvenile detention center until the age of 21.
At one time, Josie Lou Ratley and Kayla Manson were considered friends. As with many teen friendships, they can go in an ugly direction. Although we may never know exactly what transpired in this friendship, the final results are horrifying.
Josie Ratley returned home a short time ago after 2 plus months in the hospital and extensive rehab. She is still recovering with brain damage and it will be a long road back to normal. She is extremely fortunate and blessed to be alive after being stomped nearly to death by a young teen with an uncontrollable amount of rage.
The Ratley family is still in need of many medical and educational supplies as well as art material. Please review the list and donate what you can. Click here.

As a mom with a 13yr old son, this story touched me from the very begining. What really gets me is the fact that they are charging Kayla! Why? She had no idea what he was going to do! No one can read someone elses mind! If she hadn't pointed Josie out to him, someone else would have! Why is she being punished for something he did? It would make more since to charge his parents for his actions rather then a 13yr old little girl!
dont be so blind im sure they spoke of what he like to do to her
Its a well known fact that the brain does not fully develop until late teens, and into twenties for boys at times. I'm not sure why folks are so confused as to why so many teens make stupid mistakes, as this boy has made. We can debate why he did this, I'd guess he has no idea why either. He was mad, used poor judgement, and part of his brain did not stop him. I'm sure there are some young teens that are abnormal in their thinking and possibly dangerous. I honestly dont get the feeling this boy is a murderer, yet profoundly lost, angry and misled, I'm sensing his family has some serious issues as well. It sickens me what has happened to this young gal.
I agree with Loulou. Though I do think the girl should go through some type of a course. No joke in this, but a course that helps teach young teens common sense or a, 'what should be taken seriously' class... Although, I guess that comes with life experience. It can be quite common for somebody to develop anger issues if they loose somebody they love.. were his parents watching him I wonder? He probably should have been and going to therapy. I think he was emotionally traumatized by the death of his brother, his actions were out of pain. This does not excuse him what so ever though! It is all just sad, for all of them most of course for josie :[ I hope the best recovery for her...that poor girl.
Loulou...Really????? Of course she knew. What a mouth on a 13 year old!
she is being charged because there is evidence that she DID know what he was going to do and she set up the meeting anyway. I only wish they would try her as an adult.
I love how people like to think that a 13 year old has the same ability to think in a cognitive way like adults. She did not commit a crime. The boy is the one that put his steel toe the victims head. Think about when you were a kid and how many times kids threaten other kids during school days. This 13 year old need some type of age punishment, but do not ruined her life cause of the witch hunt mentality that follows every tragic event.
You people are fools if you think that a 13 year old can't know right from wrong. She's not 13 MONTHS old. This kid knew exactly what was happening. She deserves to be thrown in a cage for the rest of her life.
As a mom it sickens me the way children treat each other. And you can't tell me she read those messages and didn't think for one minute that Wayne would attempt to hurt Joise?? Come on.. 13 yr old are way smarter then they used to be. And yes.. it does fall back on the parents for failure to teach children what's right and what's wrong. Failure to teach taking responsibility is the fault of everyone involved.
Hey lawyer-boy, the word isn't "tantamount." You probably meant "paramount." I am not impressed by your attempt to put this coached little girl in our face and expect us to take your spin coming out of her mouth as if it is the absolute truth. This is all about garnering sympathy, PR, not getting out this little girl's true perspective. She's running through talking points. What a pointless interview.
wow! I am shocked at how easy it is for some of you to say this girl should be thrown to the lions for this. There should be some form of retribution but locking her up for the rest of her life?? That's ridiculous. Michelle... 13 year olds (all pre-teens) DO NOT have the same logic that adults have, were you never 13? I WAS AN IDIOT! I am lucky none of my stupid dramatic, attention seeking preteen bullshit decisions did not have bad results. She needs to be punished but be logical, stop letting your emotions tell you that a 13 year old who pointed out a person should be locked away.....GROSS!! God bless Josie, I pray that she recovers fully. BTW, what teen doesn't use bad language? I swear, some of you came out of the womb as a fully functioning adult.
her last name is Manson. does anyone else think she looks like Charlie?
These girls instigated the situation with Traecy who had emotional anger bottled up inside from witnessing a tragedy of his own. They are all suffering the consequences and it is a damn shame. People, talk to your kids about morals and having a conscience. Our teens are too young to be caught up in obscene heartless words to one another. Someone should have grabbed this boy before it got this far. Such a tragedy.
kayla doesnt need to be charge . she didnt know that this monster was going to hurt her friend. people need to understand that kayla had know idea and she shouldnt be punished for some thing she didnt do . come on she thirteen for goodness sake.
She should not be charged, she did nothing. If Josie was her friend, why would she ever tell him to do such. Its not her fault, let her go
13 year old's should not have boyfriends. I think she did help him find her friend, but she was polluted by his rage, and I doubt was able to understand or realize the consequences of her actions. She should not be sentenced too harshly, but I think she is guilty of the crime.
