A new Unreal Tournament could be announced in the coming weeks according to a tweet posted on May 2 by Mark Rein, vice president and co-founder of Epic Games.

Rein stated on Twitter, "I love #UnrealTournament - So excited for the comeback! More next week!". When a fan asked if Unreal Tournament was coming back he replied by tweeting, "RT @CodeSe7en: @MarkRein @Storm360 UT is coming back!? I've been begging for this very thing! <-Yes UT coming back!".

Paul Meegan, vice president of product development at Epic, added more details by tweeting, "UE4 Dev Community + Epic. The future of Unreal Tournament. Tune in to Thursday at 2pm ET. #unrealdev #FirstBlood".

The announcement has been welcomed by the gamer community while taking several in the game media by surprise. Brian Albert of IGN and Emanuel Maiberg of GameSpot had noted that Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic, stated back in April that there are no plans of making a new Unreal Tournament game.

Sweeney had stated at a panel during the Game Developers Conference, "We’re not [planning on] shipping an Unreal Tournament game. We have a lot of nostalgia for the game but we’re actually not developing anything in the Unreal game universe at all at the moment."

If another Unreal Tournament is in the works then it will be the first game in the series since 2007.

Unreal Tournament is a gladiator-style multiplayer shooter that help establish the popularity of competitive gaming. It's also well known for the Unreal engine which has been one of the most popular game engines used by devlopers.
