Smart Love Family Services, a seven-year-old non-profit based in Chicago and Oak Park, is scheduled to open a preschool in September. Smart Love Preschool will be located at 800 W Buena, to serve children ages 3, 4, and 5.

This play-based preschool's curriculum places emphasis on enhancing social and emotional health in children while inspiring intellectual creativity. Prior to opening the preschool this fall, Smart Love Preschool will offer a parent and toddler program for children ages 6 months to 4 years in the summer.

Tuition costs for this preschool are $8,500 for half a day - either 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM or 12:30 to 3:30 PM. School tours, parent meetings, and child play session may be scheduled by phoning the school's office (773.665.8052 ).

Smart Love(TM) was developed by native Chicagoans, Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph.D. and William J. Pieper, M.D.

I am enrolled in Early Childhood/Elementary courses at a community college. My goal is to earn a teaching degree for the pre-school thru 3rd grade level. I find it interesting that for decades the academic leaders of pre-school and kindergarten age children assumed that play was not educational. The role of drama playing, and games which consist of many learning opportunities are so important to young children. Through the play acting, hopscotch, hide n seek, dance and movement; children learn to socialize, sharing, counting, development of muscle skills and coordination and the list goes on... But, in my opinion the drama/role playing opens a window into a childs thoughts and perception of his/her world and daily life. One example-a boy who's aunt had died. He kept wanting to lie on bed and hold a ic flower, upon discussing this with the child's mother the subject of the coffin and funeral came up and they knew the child needed to talk about the death. Play is a natural learning tool.
