WCPO reports that the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden welcomed a new, four week old female gorilla this afternoon. The young female gorilla arrived at the Cincinnati Zoo from Brownsville, Texas. The zoo here in Cincinnati is excited to care for and nurture the new addition to the zoo family of animals. Despite the excitement for the Cincinnati Zoo’s new addition, officials say that the youngster’s integration to the current gorilla troop will be gradual to ensure that she is fully welcomed as a member of the family.
Everyone, and apparently every gorilla, needs time to adjust to new people and surroundings. Christians experience something similar when they first come to faith in Christ Jesus. Paul reminded the church in Galatia that Christ came “to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:5). Furthermore, through faith in Christ Jesus believers “have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:18-19).
Every Christian in Cincinnati can remember what it was like to be a new member in the family of God. Learning a new lifestyle with new family members and a perfect heavenly Father presented its challenges. Trying to figure out what it is really like to have Jesus Christ as Lord over all aspects of life is hard. Just as Cincinnati’s newest gorilla troop member needs time to integrate into her new family, new Cincinnati Christians need time to grow and mature as they integrate into the family of God. Therefore, mature believers in Christ throughout the churches in Cincinnati need to devote time to helping integrate new believers into the family of Christ.
