New This Week!

The following movies are opening in Denver this week!

OPENING IN WIDE RELEASE:

Snitch

In the fast-paced action thriller SNITCH, Dwayne Johnson stars as a father whose teenage son is wrongly accused of a drug distribution crime and is looking at a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 10 years. Desperate and determined to rescue his son at all costs, he makes a deal with the U.S. attorney to work as an undercover informant and infiltrate a drug cartel on a dangerous mission -- risking everything, including his family and his own life. Dwayne Johnson seems to be the biggest action star in the world at the moment. I would see this movie if only to hear Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) talk about "the game" again. Initial reviews are surprisingly positive. Check out the trailer below.

Dark Skies

From the producer of Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister comes Dark Skies: a supernatural thriller that follows a young family living in the suburbs. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family. Written and Directed by Scott Stewart (PRIEST, LEGION) Starring: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Kadan Rockett and J.K. Simmons (c) Weinstein

You've been seeing the trailer for this movie for months and now it finally hits theaters. Dark Skies is not screening for critics, which is usually not a good sign.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS:

Serenity (Friday and Saturday Night Only)

Playing at: The Landmark Esquire Theater

A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything—or anyone—to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But the greatest danger of all may be on their ship. Writer/director Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel") delivers an edge-of-your-seat adventure featuring explosive battles, gripping special effects and fantastic new worlds. Based on the TV series "Firefly." Nathan Fillion stars.

For all newly inducted Joss Whedon converts after the Avengers, here is a chance to check out some of his earlier work. Firefly was unfortunately short-lived, but at the very least got the chance to hit the big screen.
