If you're one of those people who loves to bake, loves sweets and considers snacks as valid as meals, you'll want to get a copy of Dr. Laura Trice's new book The Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook (Running Press, $17.95).
Dr. Trice, whose natural "Wholesome Junk Food" cookies are sold in Whole Foods around the country, is a medical doctor who believes that the food we choose to put in our bodies contributes substantially to our well-being. What she doesn't believe in is giving up sweets. Her 100+ recipes for decadent favorites like homemade ice creams, Boston Creme Pie, Hot Banana Split S'mores, Lemon Pound Cake, Chocolate Fudge Sauce, and more use natural sweeteners like dates, agave syrup and maple syrup. They're made with whole grains and other natural ingredients. There's also a section of savory snacks, including quesadillas, chips, zucchini pancakes and more. Many of the recipes are gluten-free and dairy-free for those with sensitivities.
Trice, whose company is based in Venice, is eager to engage with her audience. The Laura's Wholesome Junk Food Facebook page is dedicated to teaching about nutrition and celebrating healthy cooking and baking. Judging from the positive comments posted there by fans who've already been trying the recipes in the book, the Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook is going to be a big hit.
