Nickelodeon has revealed that they are developing a new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cartoon. The cable network announced on Thursday, Mar. 10 that they have greenlit 26 half-hour episodes of a "TMNT" CG-animated series for late 2012.
According to Nickelodeon, the show will follow the four teenage brothers -- Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo -- as they emerge from their hidden lair in the sewers for the first time in New York City.
They promise the new version will be "funnier and ninja-ier" with the turtles having "more individual attributes." Click here for a first look at the new series (via EW).
The network purchased the rights to the franchise for $60 million in 2009 and have also announced plans to produce another live-action movie adaptation.
"We knew it when we bought it - and have learned more since - it's a really beloved property," said Cyma Zarghami, president of Nickelodeon. "We've found a team to work on it who are really hard-core fans. It's the first time in our history that kids who watched the first generation are now old enough to create the next generation."
Nickelodeon also revealed that they will premiere new episodes of "SpongeBob SquarePants," "The Penguins of Madagascar," "Fanboy and Chum Chum" and "T.U.F.F. Puppy" over the next year.
They will also launch new animated series "Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness," Italian import "Winx Club," buddy comedy "Robot & Monster" and "Avatar" spinoff "The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra."
The network will introduce 450 episodes of new animated programming over the next three years, with about 200 episodes airing during their Saturday morning lineup from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. ET/PT.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Nickelodeon's first Nicktoons -- "Doug," "Ren & Stimpy" and "Rugrats" -- which debuted back in 1991.
