Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have developed an emotion detection system that could be the end of road rage and driving while too tired to drive according to the researcher's report at the EPFL website on March 13, 2014..

Working with PSA Peugeot Citroën the researchers have developed a camera in the car emotion detection system that accurately detects the seven basic human emotions: fear, anger, joy, sadness, disgust, surprise, or suspicion. This is a camera system connected to a computer in the car that does the comparison of emotion to a database in real time..

The researchers used test subject's expressions to train the system to recognize anger and disgust. These two emotions indicate the potential for erratic behavior. The system is also designed to evaluate how tired a driver is by the measuring the percentage of eyelid closure.

While not perfect in determining emotion based on comparison to self-reported emotion, the device is accurate enough to continue with development for cars.

The emotion detection system can be connected to a warning system that alerts the driver to symptoms of anger or fatigue. In the most Draconian situation, the system could halt the operation of the automobile for sufficient time to allow the person to rest or to regain their composure.

Technology has triumphed over the emotions that cause road rage and can potentially prevent accidents caused by fatigue as well.
