A new teaser and poster were recently posted online for director Nicolas Winding Refn's upcoming film "Only God Forgives," starring Ryan Gosling, who worked with him on the surprise indie hit "Drive."
Refn's latest was filmed in Bangkok, Thailand back in early 2012. The crime drama/thriller is said to be a "Western" set in the "East" and tells the tale of a Thai police lieutenant and a gangster who must settle their differences in a Thai-boxing match.
The quick teaser doesn't reveal much about the film which includes supporting characters played by Kristin Scott Thomas and Vithaya Pansringarm. The film is expected to be selected for screening at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
So far, it has only been scheduled for release in Denmark on May 23, Norway on May 24, and the Netherlands on Sept. 5. Film District acquired U.S. rights to distribute the film but has not announced a release date.
"Only God Forgives" was budgeted at around $4.8 million funded by Wild Bunch. The duo of Refn and Gosling worked together on "Drive" which also includes Carey Mulligan, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac and Albert Brooks.
Refn is also rumored to be working on an upcoming remake of "Logan's Run."
The popular Gosling stars in the upcoming crime drama "The Place Beyond the Pines," which reunited him with "Blue Valentine" director Derek Cianfrance. The film premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival and opens in limited release on March 29.
Gosling also plays a supporting role in director Ruben Fleischer's crime action/drama "Gangster Squad" with Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Anthony Mackie opening on Jan. 11.
Here's the synopsis for "Only God Forgives":

When Julian's brother is killed their mother, Jenna (Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and to find the killer. Julian's contacts in the criminal underworld lead him to The Angel of Vengeance (Pansringarm), a retired police officer who knows everything and is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.
