New Target Super Store hits Salt Lake discount row ‘bull’s eye’

A Target Super Store recently opened at 1110 South 300 West.  Target Stores are not new to the Wasatch Front; stores already operate in Ogden, Layton, Centerville, Midvale, Sandy, South and West Jordan, and Orem, but it is the first within the Salt Lake City limits.  The 300 West store is brand new; 200 new employees were hired to staff it.

The new Target Store offers Salt Lake shoppers the same cheerful, upbeat red and white interior and the same ‘one-stop’ shopping convenience of grocery, drug, home goods, clothing, and garden items consistent with other Target Super Stores.

It is also the most recent of several discount ‘super’ stores, including Home Depot, Costco, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, and Lowe’s to start up along a ten block expanse between 1100 and 2100 South on 300 West. This former industrial area southwest of downtown Salt Lake could well be dubbed ‘discount row.’

The area offers convenience and bargains to residents in the surrounding area.  Sugar House and East Bench area residents currently lack this convenience.  While it is true that there is a Smith’s Super Store on 3300 South and 3300 East, technically in the Millcreek area, prices are higher than at Wal-Mart and Target.

Some have suggested that the 300 West locale is equally convenient for east side residents, but it does require a trek across town.  Moreover, Costco and Sam’s Club require membership and some shoppers, regardless of residence, have expressed safety concerns with the parking at the 300 West Wal-Mart.

Fortunately, there is a newer Home Depot just south of the Sugar House on 3300 South and Highland Drive and Wal-Mart plans to open a store on the sight of a previous K-Mart on Parley’s Way following resolution of a zoning issue.  Unfortunately, no Target Store is yet slated for the east side or Sugar House areas.
