While the long-term effect of magnesium consumption and the risk of gallstone disease is unknown deficiencies in adequate levels of magnesium can cause dyslipidemia* and insulin hypersecretion which may facilitate gallstone formation.
*Dyslipidemia is an abnormal amount of lipids (e.g. cholesterol and/or fat) in the blood. In developed countries, most dyslipidemias are hyperlipidemias; that is, an elevation of lipids in the blood.
A study was conducted of 42,705 U.S. men from 1986 to 2002 to determine the long-term effect of magnesium consumption on the risk of symptomatic gallstone disease. The study, sponsored by the Nutritional Magnesium Association, was conducted at the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, Kentucky. It reported that adequate levels of magnesium can lower the risk of gallstones by as much as 33%. Findings that do suggest a protective role of magnesium consumption in the prevention of symptomatic gallstone disease among men.
The Role of Magnesium:
Magnesium is known to help regulate muscle functionality throughout the body. It modulates and helps to control the entry and release of calcium from the cells, which determines muscular activity. The gallbladder is made of muscle, thus the magnesium mineral helps ensure that it activates and releases calcium properly.
Additional research indicates that social stresses increase gallstone risk. Magnesium is known to have a calming effect that also helps to combat stress and helps keep adrenal stress hormones under control.
Elderly consumers as well as those with arthritis, asthma, depression, diabetes, gallbladder disease, osteoporosis, or gum disease are often found to be deficient in hydrochloric acid which is also associated with magnesium deficiency.
Consult a nutritional practitioner to help determine your own body's magnesium needs. Magnesium is available by a large number of manufacturers and one may work better for you. Additionally, magnesium is often more effective when taken with complimentary supplements so find out what works best for you.
