New study confirms: Facebook helps employers find good employees

Today on the Steve Hawkins show on Bristol's Super Talk WFHG, there was a discussion about a new study done about Facebook and Employers. The study will soon be published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, and it was conducted at Northern Illinois University. Steve Hawkins and his guests discussed Facebook and the various ways that it can affect your career goals in a positive or negative manner.

One of the lead researchers of the study in question, Donald Kluemper, told the Chicago Tribune that companies have been using I.Q. and personality tests for years to judge whether a candidate is suitable.

As it became clear that more companies were scanning the Internet for information on job applicants, Kluemper and his team set out to establish how much reliable data can be gleaned from such sources.

"Hiring specialists were just trying to eliminate someone who was doing something inappropriate," Kluemper said. "What we did is try to assess the personality traits in a similar way that they might be assessed by a standardized test."

Are you being served well by your Facebook page? If an employer looked at what you have posted over the past few months, what kind of conclusions would they arrive at about you and what you bring to the table as a team member. On the Steve Hawkins Show, Steve and a female entity on the show both emphatically mentioned that a negative person would not be such a great hire!

One big question that I have after hearing most of the radio program and reading the article mentioned above is this: How do the privacy settings affect this breach of privacy? If you have your privacy settings very tight, there is no way for the company to access your posts, right? Are companies requiring an applicant to open their social media accounts for their perusal?
