New study claims Westboro Baptist Church take on homosexuals the minority

The Westboro Baptist Church and other hate filled groups who claim homosexuality is a sin is headed for being the minority. A new study claims that the percentage of Americans who think homosexuality is a sin shows significant decrease.

Life Way Research organization performed a poll in November asking Americans if they believed being homosexual was a sin. The poll revealed only 37 percent of the people surveyed thought it was a sin.

The results reflect a seven point drop from last year’s survey. According to the survey answers, the number of people who do not believe homosexuality is a sin rose by two percent. The majority of people who are unsure of what they believe made up the largest group of people surveyed.

Life Way Research president Ed Stetzer stated he believed the decrease came in part from President Barack Obama’s “embrace of same-sex marriage. Stetzer stated Obama’s statements “probably impacted the evolution of cultural values. There is a real and substantive shift, surprisingly large for a one year time frame.”

Anthea Butler is an associate professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Butler attributes “a surge in the popularity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) celebrities and media figures like Ellen DeGeneres has also contributed to the movement.”

Stetzer references Pastor Louie Giglio’s withdrawal from the upcoming inauguration ceremony of Obama as a shift in our culture. Stetzer stated, “The culture is clearly shifting on homosexuality and this creates a whole new issue. How will America deal with a minority view, strongly held by Evangelicals, Catholics, Mormons, Muslims and so many others?”
