Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies and State Fire Marshalls arrested a New Smyrna Beach man Sunday night after a house and vehicle fire on Mallonee Road. Volusia County Sheriff’s spokesperson Brandon Haught says 49-year old Troy Ladd was charged with attempted murder, arson to a structure normally occupied, and damage to a structure due to arson. Haught says no one was hurt in the fires, which were reported by Ladd’s girlfriend. She told investigating deputies that she woke up Sunday night and found Ladd, “…dumping gasoline all over the furniture of their home…then ran outside and saw that her vehicle was already engulfed in flames.”
Volusia County and New Smyrna Beach firefighters found Ladd “…standing in the street in front of the house…” as they arrived on the scene. The girlfriend told investigating officers that Ladd had been burning his clothes, TV and video game system in the backyard earlier in the evening. She had gone to sleep after confronting Ladd about the backyard fire, but was awakened by popping noises from her Jeep which was on fire shortly before midnight. Firefighters reported heavy damage to the home and vehicle from fire, smoke and water. The Sheriff’s Office says Ladd did not “…try to wake his girlfriend up or warn her in any way about the fire.” Ladd was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
