WGN is gearing up to premiere it's first scripted program this fall when it releases "Salem" to it's viewers. WGN has decided to jump on the popularity of witches on television after the success of shows like Lifetime's "Witches of East End" and FX's "American Horrror Story:Coven".
"Salem" was originally planned to be shown on FX has been picked up by WGN for thirteen full episodes.
The show is set to tell the story of 17th century Salem during the hysterical and ferverant time of the Salem Witch Trials. The show will look at what really fueled the hysterics and fear of that time while looking at it from a supernatural point of view. It is said to mix the "real" story with "supernatural" themes.
The story will focus on Mary Sibley played by Janet Montgomery, the beautiful, ruthless but vulnerable wife of an ancient, ailing but very wealthy Salem town Selectman.
So, are witches taking over as television champions from the vampire and zombie shows?
