School is back in session for the Cincinnati area. Students are in new classrooms, teachers in new routines, parents are facing new challenges with students a year older. Some are starting school for the first time, while others are back in familiar places with new experiences. The beginning of the school year is full of new things, people, places, and challenges. That is the one of the most wonderful things about a new school year in Cincinnati – it is somehow all new all over again. Cincinnati gets to start fresh each August when school comes back around.
Hebrews 13:8 states, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” While a new school year brings new challenges, people, places, and events, the Lord is the same Lord who has been sovereign over the universe from before the beginning. Things in Cincinnati may change, and they may change each year, but God himself is always God. He is always the same faithful, loving, gracious heavenly father he has always been.
While God is the same today, he will also be the same tomorrow and forever after that. The prophet Isaiah reminds God’s people, “Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable” (Isaiah 40:28). God sustains his people because, despite how new everything can be each year, God is the same sovereign Lord of all creation. He is still enthroned on high and reigns from Heaven. His people “here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come” (Hebrews 13:14). While everything is new in Cincinnati at the start of a new school year, Cincinnati Christians still worship the same powerful, mighty, gracious, sovereign God. God’s consistency is something Cincinnati Christians can rely on regardless of what is happening in their lives.
