While San Diego’s former Mayor Bob Filner is in the headlines for his bad boy antics and recent felony conviction, San Diego’s new leader is taking the high road and fostering a positive image. Todd Gloria has served as Councilperson for San Diego District 3 and President of San Diego City Council. He now serves as Interim Mayor for the City of San Diego, home of the San Diego Padres, San Diego Chargers and U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. You can meet Todd Gloria in person tomorrow October 17 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Hess Brewing for “Microbrews with the Interim Mayor,” a great way to learn what San Diegans are thinking about.
Two features of Interim Mayor Gloria’s most recent newsletter published today promise long-term benefits for the sports business community. Gloria announced a $200 million investment in bike paths throughout the San Diego Region. Of special interest to biking enthusiasts and the many businesses that cater to them are the popular routes of the San Diego River Trail and Bayshore Bikeway. In addition, the good news that the Coastal Commission has approved an expansion of the San Diego Convention Center will add more space for popular sports events. There are five major sports events scheduled at the convention center this winter:
- Sports for Exceptional Athletes - Floor Hockey
- The Athletic Business Conference & Expo
- 2014 NCAA Annual Convention
- Training Magazine’s 2014 Conference and Expo
- The International Health, Racquet and Sports Club Association 33rd Annual International Convention & Trade Show
Interim Mayor Gloria is also doing his fair share to represent San Diego’s large Olympic athlete and alumni community and the many supporters of the U.S. Olympic Team’s San Diego Training Center. While less diplomatic politicians have had no success in hitting the “reset” button with 2014 Olympics host, Todd Gloria demonstrated leadership by reaching out to his counterpart in San Diego’s sister city, Vladivostok, Russia. Gloria wrote last month to Vladivostok Mayor Igor Pushkaryov to encourage the Olympic values of equality and respect for all and strengthen ties between the two Pacific Ocean harbor cities, which share their maritime traditions.
If you plan to attend tomorrow’s Microbrews with the Interim Mayor, Hess Brewing is located at 3812 Grim Avenue in North Park. Please contact Eric Magruder at firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP.
