There is a great new restaurant in Guelph that in addition to a fabulous mainstream Italian menu, also serves up an amazing gluten free pasta dish that will have you returning again and again. Buon Gusto is located right downtown next to the Eaton Centre so parking is a bit of an issue in the daytime and during Guelph Storm hockey games but the rest of the time parking is easy. But the restaurant is worth the trouble.
The restaurant itself, has a rich Toronto vibe, with a lively ambiance and great sightlines. The bar is open to the restaurant and the kitchen space so there is a continual energy happening around you as you dine.
The menu is real Italian with a trademark sauce that is truly amazing. Their secret - San Marzano tomatoes and an incredible chef to build on the tomatoes to create the spectacular sauces. So herein lies the gluten-free dream. They use a quinoa based pasta which is far more delectable than rice based noodles, and then it is smothered in their amazing San Marzano sauce. You can choose the seafood version or a version with sausage as well.
In speaking with the owner, Bernie Dyer, he stands behind his gluten free offering and the separate preparation area but warns that in making the pizzas for the traditional menu, there is always a risk of flour dust travelling through the air. This is possible in any restaurant and to date, I have had no problems and infinite pleasure from the food in the new Buon Gusto restaurant.
They have several amazing salads on the menu as well and the servers are well versed in the gluten issue. Where they do not know an answer they go ask and that gives me true confidence in their gfree offering.
We close with an amazing wine list and excellent wines by the glass! So get down to Buon Gusto for a gluten free experience that you will wish to repeat!
