Louisiana is a state that is said to offer a lot for a lot of people, but a new study shows that it doesn't have a whole lot for women. Yahoo News revealed on Sept. 25, 2013, that a new report shows that in America, Louisiana is indeed the worst state for women to both live and work in.
Maryland is looked at as the best state for women to live and work in. It was followed by Hawaii, Vermont, California, and Delaware. Louisiana was followed in the bottom by Utah, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Findings were revealed by the Center for American Progress in a new interactive map that combined and compared data on a number of topics. Some of the topics included the wage gap between men and women, paid family leave laws, infant mortality rates, poverty rates, and the percentage of women without health insurance in each state.
In total, the study used 36 different factors and also checked out how a number of them applied to minorities.
Other factors were included as well such as:
- How women fare in positions of power
- Factors outside of income and personal health
- Women in Congress in each state
- The number of women elected to statewide executive office
“More than 22 percent of women in Louisiana are in poverty, compared to 11 percent of women in Maryland,” reads the report’s summary. “Additionally, taking in all of the leadership factors considered, Maryland ranks first in the nation in terms of women reaching leadership positions in the public and private sector. Meanwhile, Louisiana receives a D- on overall leadership factors.”
The rankings do show an incredibly diverse mix that has shocked some political and cultural analysts. States are mixed throughout the entire poll, and not many landed where they were expected to.
A study was conducted in June of this year to determine the best and worst states for children to live in. New Hampshire got the title as the best while New Mexico received the title as the worst state to raise a child in.
In that poll, Louisiana was listed as the fourth worst state for children to live in.
