New Releases: 02/07/12 - Dr. Dog, The Fray, Van Halen and more

Toronto-based songwriter, Afie Jurvanen a.k.a. Bahamas, releases sophomore album Barchords on Brushfire Records. The 12-song disc contains captivatingly melodic folk-rock songs.

Be The Void, the seventh album by psychdelic rockers Dr. Dog, drops on Anti-. The album is reminiscent of the band's earlier work -- straight up rock 'n' roll -- edgy, distorted, and played with passion.

Dr. Dog is currently on tour in support of Be The Void. As of press time no Buffalo area dates have been announced.

Scars & Stories, the much-anticipated third album from Grammy-nominated The Fray, is out  now on Epic Records and features the single Heartbeat. The album was recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Neil Young). Scars & Stores is avaliable in two versions - regular and deluxe. The deluxe edition contains five bonus tracks - covers recorded by The Fray - including Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," Emmylou Harris' "Boulder to Birmingham," Annie Lennox's "Why," The Fugees "Ready of Not," and Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Maps."

On Sunday, The Fray kicked off Super Bowl XLVI with Lenny Kravitz as part of the pregame festivities at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Denver-based band will kick off a North American tour on February 16 at House of Blues in San Diego, CA.

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Kweller releases his fifth studio album, entitled Go Fly a Kite. The album is Kweller's first release produced solely by his own record label, The Noise Company.

Canadian rockers Kiros release Lay Your Weapons Down on Ain't No Grave Records. The  band's third studio album was produced by Mark Lee Townsend (Relient K, The Wedding) and deals with themes of future, hope and faith in God.

Paralytic Stalks, the eleventh album by psychedelic pop group of Montreal, was released on Polyvinyl Records. The album was recorded in Kevin Barnes' home studio and was mixed at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, Georgia with engineer Drew Vadenberg.

Kisses on the Bottom, the 15th studio album by Sir Paul McCartney, is out now on Hear Music. According to his website the album is "Paul's personal tribute to personal favourites and two new self-penned compostions. The track My Valentine features Eric Clapton on guitar, while Only Our Hearts features Stevie Wonder. Kisses on the Bottom is McCartney's first release since Memory Almost Full (2007) and was recorded in Los Angeles, New York, and London.

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten releases Tramp on Jagjaguwar. For this release, Van Etten collaborated with Zach Condonb, Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), Julianna Barwick, Matt Barrick (Walkmen), Thomas Bartlett, and Aaron Dessner (The National).

Sharon Van Etten will play Lee's Palace in Toronto, ON, Canada on February 21.

A Different Kind of Truth, Van Halen's first album since reuniting with David Lee Roth in 2007, is out now on Interscope Records. Ther band's first album in fourteen years is also the first to feature bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, song of guitarist Eddie Van Halen and actress Valerie Bertinelli. Tattoo, the album's first single, was the number one selling rock song in the United States, Canada, Finland, and the Netherlands one day after it's release on iTunes.

Van Halen will play First Niagara Center in downtown Buffalo on March 9 with special guest Kool & The Gang. Tickets are $149.50, $79.50, $49.50 and $29.50 and can be purchased at the First Niagara Center Box Office and online at www.tickets.com.
